    6. First of all, I picked this up mainly because it looked like a nice easy read (200 pages). However, it also drew my attention because of its subject matter. It is very rare to see foreign writers writing about Turkish history; especially that most delicate of eras, the fantastic and almost impossible phoenix-like regeneration that transformed a country reduced to a sultanate stagnating in an atmosphere of slothful religious decadence, to a powerful new state, with a government free from the trap [...]

    8. Well the first reading the book was just OK. Actually, I have a great hope on this book, 4 stars maybe but until the last page it was just OK. The theme is very interestinge art of Calligraphybut I do not really enjoy the narration. The main character Rikkat is dreadfully dull. The only thing I enjoy in this book is the revelation of the mystery and the thought on art of calligraphy. Maybe, it's too early for me to read this book. I am a reader who believes that there is always appropriate time [...]

    13. I mildly enjoyed The Calligraphers' Night, but overall I didn't really find it all that interesting. If it had been longer, I might not have finished it. Not much happens: it is the story of a 20th century Turkish woman's life, told in the first person by her after her death. She was an unusually independent woman for her time period, who became a calligrapher and taught at the university, and separated from two husbands (with two sons, one from each). The main point of the book seems to be not [...]

    16. my death as soft the top pandan water dipped in the ink, the ink is absorbed more quickly than paper." said Rikkat, Usmani calligraphy artist, a voice floated between darkness and lightness, when she began writing story of her life.By concocting calligraphy art world that are less known, the area which is too strange and mystical, with Turkey will open Contemporary Western influence, Yasmine Ghata wrote a wonderful debut novel a classic and inspiring all at once based on a true story that inspir [...]

    17. I enjoy stories about strong women, who overcome obstacles and make a difference in a male dominated world. So, when I read that this book was about the first female calligrapher, Rikkat Kunt, I thought it would be interesting, but it was just disappointing. The author is Rikkat´s granddaughter and she tries to tell her life story in a poetic fashion and this, in my opinion, is what makes the book so boring. You are lead to believe that Rikkat’s choice to be a calligrapher was revolutionary, b [...]

    21. Beautiful, lyrical and literary, this is a dream of a book in more ways than one. It works on so many levels and it is those levels that make it special: memoir, history, fantasy, study of a country and a culture, an understanding of the artist at work and the creative urge. Beautifully written and beautifully constructed,I found it moving, thought-provoking and inspiring. A very poetic novel.(Please note, I am using the word beautiful a lot, because that's what this book is.)

    22. suka ceritanya tapi gak suka cara berceritanya. padahal pov nya cukup menarik, sosok rikkat kunt, sang kaligrafer yg sudah berpulang, kembali untuk menceritakan kisah hidupnya. sayang, penjabaran emosi rikkat di sini tidak tertangkap, jadi rasanya seperti jalan lurussss gak ada belokan tanjakan turunan.

    23. Dua bintang lagi.

    24. This was painfully boring. It seems to have won some awards, continuing the weird tradition the literary community has of rewarding boring work because it's "serious." I wanted to give this a chance because the actual writing/translation is good but it's hard to stick with a boring story being told by a boring narrator.
