    1. I'm giving this book four stars because it was a 500+ page book in Hebrew, and it managed to maintain my interest despite these two strikes against it. With that said, there were some draggy parts and I did start to tire of it at times in the middle and toward the end. On the other hand, the story's themes were interesting and well-executed. So, four stars.Several story lines converge with multiple viewpoints and timelines, a device about which I tend to be ambivalent. Sometimes it felt as if Ne [...]

    2. Wow! Can't put it down. This book touches my heart on so many levels. A beautifully written masterpiece. Would have been even way better without the ideological stuff in the last third of the book.

    7. When Dorit’s father goes travelling in South America following the death of his wife, Dorit feels impelled to go and find him. On his search, he meets Inbar, who is on a journey of her own to escape a grief she cannot deal with. The lives of all three of them become intertwined as they wander through South America searching for Dorit’s father, meeting a disparate group of people on the way, all of whom are on some sort of personal quest. This is an insightful and often moving tale, part famil [...]

    9. If I could have rated this book a 6--or better still a 10--I would happily have done so it's that wonderful (though I did find the ending a bit vague and not wholly satisfying). Still, Nevo's themes and his ability to surprise as he weaves together a complex plot provide the reader with some lovely imagery and many deeply moving moments.Dori's middle aged father has disappeared while on a trip to South America after the death of his wife, Dori's mother. Dori leaves his wife and young son in Isra [...]

    11. I liked it but it was a bit too long, and I wasn't to keen on the final quarter. I thought it was, well, a but naive, preachy, and silly. Also the ending was anticlimactic. However the characters were interesting and well crafted, and the prose was excellent, so yes, it was a good book. It could have used more of a plot. The first quarter should not be more exciting than the last.Truthfully, I think if had tightened the book more and cut off 150 pages it would have been a better book.

    12. This is a brilliant book with a theme of the wandering Jew and explores love in all its guises. Nevo weaves a complex tale of two linked families through 3 generations: their marriages and passions and sacrifices.

    13. Israelis love to escape, or maybe they just need to. It’s a country constantly under the threat of war. The fear of an attack is always upon us whenever we go outside. Even if we don’t consciously think something might happen, it’s in the back of the head. The news is constantly informing us about who died and who got injured. While everyone else in the Western world is having sex at the age of 18, we’re learning how to use a gun.The desire to escape is all over the country. Not everyone [...]

    14. I really enjoyed this book. Sympathetic characters, interesting plot, lessons to be learned without them being hit over your head. It's a story of longing, wandering and is the grass really greener?, and striving for something better. Just a good read.

    16. a journey book of 2 persons who attractive to each other and bond in some strange journey in south america. love it

L’intrec [...]

    22. Few books bring a tear to my eye, but the end of Neuland did. I was attracted to this book mainly because I've backpacked extensively in South America (and, to a lesser extent, because of my Jewish heritage). Neuland serves as a decent (although somewhat lacking) travel memoir for Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. It also delves (fairly lightly) into the philosophical issues of the nature of Zionism, and the ideological challenges for the future of Zionist Israel. Plus there are the topics [...]

    25. At one stage I struggled a bit with the book but I think that was to do with me and not the book. However, I got into it again and I loved it. This is a beautifully written book about love, loss, loneliness, friendship, endurance. I found it to be really sensitively written and most insightful. In addition, I loved the philosophical aspect. I heard Eshkol Nevo speak at the Franschhoek Literary Festival. I wish I had read his book before then, as there are a number of questions I would've liked t [...]

    27. What is a home? What is a homeland? Do we need to belong somewhere physical, or is our home those we love? I found this interesting, but the principal characters curiously unengaging. The older generation, who had suffered so much were much more involving, although Dori's father was rather exasperating, in the way that many people blinkered by their own vision can be.Overall, I'd recommend it, but perhaps one that you need to read in one go, not over several weeks so that you lose (or perhaps ne [...]

    28. This was a lucky find in the library, and it was really a 4.5 for me- Nevo can write! His writing is clever, wise and at times funny, he captures relationships and moments between people perfectly. The setting is completely foreign to me, but I felt like I knew the place. Several generations of Jews, wandering in their own ways and coping with their own trauma. Several Promised Lands, and characters with unexpected connections. Great read, and I'll be looking for more of his books.

    29. Excellent book.Eshkol Nevo has the special talent in creating a fascinating plot made from our childhood memories, historical facts, philosophical theories and complexed characters. The book ends in a way that leaves you half amazed hald dissapointed, saying "what's next?" and that's the beauty of the book.Enjoyable.

    30. I enjoyed very much reading this book. The Author brings History to life again, suggesting a different angel of perception to History. What ifWhat if we took Hetzel`s idea of having a Jewish state in Argentina. I stayed with the thoughts about the book for a few days after done reading.
