    1. A very well written little book, with characters that become increasingly annoying as the book progresses. I have little patience for those 19th century British women with their headaches and hang-ups!

    2. Intelligent and psychologically quite astute. Set in the 1850s, the book captures in painstaking detail quite emblematic of the era the inner journey of an unmarried woman in her late thirties, paralleled with the progress she and her family make along the Rhine river. It's as if Jane Austin and Anita Brookner had joined forces to produce a mature, contemplative and ultimately moving read.

    3. This was a re-read of a book I first read in the 80s. While plot points were long forgotten I never forgot the spirit of this elegantly written and intelligent book.

    4. I know she's partly just a woman of her times but I despised the main character for being a weak little simpleton. Maybe she transforms in the end, I couldn't bear to follow it that far.
