        Kuttikrishna Marar 14 June 1900 6 April 1973 was an Indian essayist and literary critic born in Pattambi, Kerala.His work on Bharathaparyadanam A critical study of the Mahabharata is one that won him many honours He passed the Sahityashiromani exam from the Samskrita College in Pattambi He started his career as Sahithyacharya at the Kerala Kalamandalam For 15 years he was with Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon and published many of his writings From 1938 to 1961 he was the proofreader of the Malayalam daily newspaper,Mathrubhoomi In 1967, he received Sahithya Ratnam award and Sahithya nipunan award from Tripunithura Sanskrit college.His work Malayaala Saili is still one of the most authentic treatises on proper Malayalam usage Bharata Paryatanam Travel through Bharata , another important work of Marar is critical exposition of the characters and main events in the epic Mahaabhaarata Bharatha Paryatanam, Sahithyasallapam, Danthagopuram, Kaivilakku collections of literary criticism are his important works on literary criticism In addition to the above, there are than 19 collections essays on literary criticism.Another important work of Marar is Kala Jeevitham Thanne Art is Life itself , which won him Kerala Sahithya Academy Award, Kendra Sahithya Academy Award and M.P Paul Prize.


    1. Great analysis of the Mahabharata.Kuttikrishna Marar takes many of the characters and episodes of the great epic and analyses them in their literary context. This type of analysis, where no external factors are brought into play other than the clues provided in the text itself, enthralled me when I first read it in my early twenties. I don't remember much to give a detailed review here - which shows it is high time for a re-read.

    3. This is one of those rare works which demystifies all your taken for granted ideas. It is a brilliant re-reading of some of the characters of Mahabharatha. You will undoubtedly accept him as the greatest critic in Malayalam literature.

    7. This book was part of syllabus at school. It is a critical study of the 'Mahabharatha' . The book unravels the mysteries hidden in the epic while travelling through the minds of its characters. This work by Kuttikrishna Maarar is a worthy read :)

    11. The book I rever most. The book I love most. An epic description of an epic by a really epic scholar. I really worship this book. And from the day I completed it, it is my soul guide for my life. My best companion and teacher and torch bearer.No one except Marar sir explains Mahabharatha in this way.     12. this book critically examines the epic tale of Mahabharatha and at some points clearly depicts that those "negative" characters has a real positive value especially when it comes to the 'sootha puthra- karna'

    13. Read this as a part of my course work in school. Brilliant take on the Mahabharat starting from Bheesmar to Karna. Author's commentary after each story in this epic will blow your mind. Must read for folks wanting to learn more about Mahabharat and the war.

    14. Must read if you want to understand the essence of Mahabharatha. Excellent analysis of Mahabharata by Marar. It will change your perception of various characters in Mahabharatha. I wish this book is available in all Indian Languages.

    15. A must read book for Malayalam and Indian myth lovers. The book is deep, stunning and provides a very complicated critic and whole new perspective about Mahabharatha. PS : If you loved Randamoozham, you MUST read this book. This won't disappoint you for sure!

    16. One of the rare and good book which showcases different perspective of many ideas through mind reading of some of the characters of Mahabharatha.
