    1. Grave's published letters give the reader quite the insight into his artistic and personal life. The letters are well organized, and make it easy to follow the various threads.I originally sought the book to discover more about Grave's life on The Rock (on Fidalgo Island, near Anacortes WA) and his account of the landscape, at the time. Morris lived there 1940-1947. However, I found myself intrigued by other aspects of his life too.

    2. Reading and writing letters, instead of emails, is a much more thoughtful way of thinking and communicating with others. Graves gets and receives correspondence that is insightful and inspiring, and sometimes scathing. He talks about art, the way it's made and the way it is perceived, as well as how difficult it is to find the right time to make art without interruption and with enough time to complete a work.
