    1. I'm using this book for inspiration. Because it is. Inspirational.I wish I'd used it when I was last in Washington, DC!

    2. In scrapbook style, this work collects photographs, stories, and a young girl's love of donuts in order to present young readers (best for 3rd - 5th graders) with a new take at African American history. As a sample of Sienna's narrative: "Boy. So much of our history is all about the problems we faced, but as Dad says, we not only survived, we thrived. Amen to that! Our history is so rich. 3. Sienna and her family take a road trip vacation, stopping at prominent points of interest relating to African American history. At first, Sienna isn't thrilled with the idea but at each stop history comes alive for her (and the reader). Each page is set up like a scrapbook highlighting the main points of each stop without bogging down the reader with too many details. I wish I had been taken on such a road trip!

    4. This book is a scrapbook of a young girls journey across the country with her family. It is a great book for teaching about African American history and culture. I believe that my students could relate to this character, and I could read this story before starting a project on family lineage studies.

    5. This is a wonderful book to use when teaching students about black history month. This book allows the students to get a sense of what was going on and how they can relate it back to their own experiences.

    6. While I love the scrapbook format of the book, and the wealth of information it contains, something about the narrator, Sienna's, matter-of-fact descriptions of somber topics such as Amistad, followed by a quick, "How horrible!" rubbed me the wrong way.

    7. Pretty good book to introduce little kids to some of the big events of black history. It seemed like there was product placement for Krispy Kreme Donuts, though.
