    2. The take-home message is read everything Zweig ever wrote. Jeez. Such flowing, insightful, lucid prose, like a faucet streaming graceful intelligence across and down the pages. A good book for November's melancholic seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness. Holderlin the ethereal poet, Kleist the restless exaggerator, Nietzsche the inspired light. Totally compelling across the board biographical essays on creative genius and madness. Goethe comes up all the time as a sort of rational gubernatoria [...]

    4. I have little enough time for writing this review. So I won't. But what I can tell you is that this book is a fine and perfect example of great writing. Zweig is a master at teaching and expressing his thoughts clearly and he is so very interesting in his approach to this (and any) subject. Though he was profiling three great artists of their own particular time in Holderlin, Kleist, and Nietzsche, Zweig was primarily instructing us on the daemon, which is a word I had heard prior to this readin [...]

    6. There do exist such sort of books which you open to discover, but can't continue reading - you close it because of its tough and severe topic, because of the durable agony of its characters. However, on one sunny day you suddenly realize that it would be better for you to go on reading it till the end. It whispers that there is something hiding behind that will definitely help you to encounter the troubles and can light up a little candle on your dark suspicions about the world injustice towards [...]

    8. I'm really bad at wrtinig rewievs, but for this book, I'll force myself to give it a try.Book is divided on three parts, each describing life and work of a great German writer, philosopher.I don't know what it is about the author's style, but for some reason, every sentence you read, feels like a quotation. The translation is wonderful and inside of it you can feel the pride, beauty and gentlesness (i don't really care if this is an english word or not) of german language. To me, the book was wo [...]

    19. As others have pointed out, Zweig's beautiful prose would be reason enough to read these portraits, which are more dramatic works of art than biographies, but there is also practical value in this book because to grasp an intuition of the daemon is to delineate the axes and contrasts of literary genius. The themes of isolation, ascension and consumption at the hands of the daemon recur in each of these great "German" writers. The variations and subtleties serve both as cautionary tales and inspi [...]

    20. The stories of Holderlin, Kleist and Nietszsche, who struggled with the 'demon' but produced great art. The passion which drove them to creative highs also destroyed them; or as Zweig puts it "the juices were too plentiful to be contained within the frail rind of man's body. The wine burst the bottle." Poignant, lyrical, Zweig's writing soars & insights apply to many artists & writers today. So erudite, he wonderfully brings these geniuses to life.

    21. Zweig gives a biography of the three great German writers and thinkers, Holderin, Kleist, and Nietzsche. There's a great comparison of their lives of passion and creativity and internal struggles that drove them not only to produce great works, but also led to their mental breaks.

    22. In addition to writing works of fiction, Stefan Zweig was noted for his biographies and non-fiction essays. This book contains three related essays on three German writers - the poet Friedrich Hölderlin, the writer and playwright Heinrich von Kleist, and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. These three have a number of things in common, including a love of "classic" literature and Greece, and more importantly, a streak of madness. Both Hölderlin and Nietzsche went mad at the end of their lives [...]

    24. A magnificent character study of three greats in German cultural history, centered around the intriguing motif of struggling with an inner daemon. The use of Goethe as the antimony to these three masters provides an excellent contrast and a thorough, yet not exhaustive, profile of another German cultural father.

    26. The Neitzche was probably the best portrait, but Holderlin and Kliest were also still quite interesting. Probably the most subjective biographies I've ever read but the language and treatment of the three artists made up for it.
