    1. Whoops. I forgot to actually write a review about this one. In my quest to read all of the James Beard nominated cookbooks, I picked up this one. Really, though, this is way more than just a cookbook. The recipes are ancillary to the history of New York food. Schwartz chronologically details the various influences in the region - from Native American food heritage to the Dutch to the Jews to the Germans the list goes on and on.     2. This book is a fascinating history of NYC seen through the lens of food. From what the Native Americans were eating and growing (the Canarsy Indians had farms in what is now Canarsie, Brooklyn) to what the settlers introduced, and how different waves of immigrants influenced what New Yorkers and eventually Americans, ate. It has stuff about how the cultures of Italians and Jews were so food-centric, while the Irish culture was drink-centric, the rise then fall of the many seafood restaurants as [...]

    4. I take a lot of cookbooks out of the library and never put them on my page; but this book is an exception. Not only does it have many enticing recipes but the author gives us an historic and inside look at many of the famous and revered institutions of New York City. Check it out!
