    1. The fox and Bunny disrupt Brownie Groundhog's hibernation. Fox wants a scarf but in the process of rummaging through Brownie's house, end up creating a lovely surprise. Inconsiderate friends end up presenting an inconsiderate surprise, but that's what friends do, right? Young listeners will enjoy Brownie's semi-coherent mumblings and fox's poor interpretation. P.S. This is not a Groundhog's Day book. You're welcome.

    2. brownie groundhog goes to bed, but fox and bunny want to borrow some things from him. It finally wakes him up and the fox and bunny have a big surprise for groundhog, lots of lights and festivities. They have a party and then groundhog heads back to bed.

    3. Text: 3 starsIllustrations: 3 starsCute story but, like Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox, it doesn't adhere to generally accepted rules of the natural world. I doubt it is possible to wake a hibernating animal so easily.

    4. Lovely, cozy illustrations. The story was interesting - the fox enters Brownie's home without permission and uses her things without asking in order to surprise her (he decorated her tree with lights). But Brownie isn't angry, and instead graciously enjoys her surprise. The three friends (including bunny) have a winter feast to celebrate. I chose not to puzzle too much over the moral here because every other aspect of this book is so charming. After all, the description on the dust jacket mentio [...]

    5. Brownie Groundhog and the Wintry Surprise is a picture book intended for children preschool and up. The story is about a bear who is going away for the winter but his friends want to give him a surprise before he leaves for the winter. I rated the book a four because the book helps teach about friendship, the changing seasons and begins to introduce hibernation. For this age many children are beginning to enter into different friendships with other boys and girls. This book helps explain how gre [...]

    6. A very good choice if you're doing a Groundhog Day storytime. I like this better than the first Brownie Groundhog book (Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox), but either is still good for storytime. I just like that in Wintry Surprise the two are already friends, no tricking each other. Less whining in Wintry Surprise too - no grumping about being hungry or winter not being over. Those couple factors made Brownie a little less likeable in the first one - for me at least.I love the sleepy talk [...]

    7. Another fun adventure for the clever groundhog named Brownie and her fox and bunny friends. My preschooler enjoys the peeks into Brownie’s burrow, “Mom, she has a bed and dresser like me. And even a guitar!”

    8. Blackaby's second book about Brownie Groundhog and her friend Fox is just as wonderful at Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox. And another wonderful example of rich vocabulary for pre-readers.At the conclusion of a pleasant picnic with Fox and Bunny, Brownie heads off for her winter nap, leaving Fox with a trembling chin in anticipation of how much he'll miss her. She tells him to do "wintry things," so he, with the reluctant Bunny in tow, enter the sleeping Brownie's den and helps himself to [...]

    9. We bought this book from the January Canada flier and I'm severely disappointed. It was advertised as having something to do with Groundhog Day, but it has nothing to do with it whatsoever except one line on the second to last page, "See you in February" (with no explanation as to why the Fox would see the Groundhog in February). This book is really about one character (the Fox) who breaks into someone's home (the Groundhog's) and rifles through her things over a third character (the Bunny)'s o [...]

    10. What happens when a sleepy groundhog named Brownie wants to hibernate for the winter and her friends have other ideas?Fox and Bunny try to listen to Brownies Do Not Disturb instructions to no avail. Fox is cold and wants to borrow Brownies scarf. Laughs and giggles from preschoolers will take place when they hear Fox try to interpret Brownies sleepy words. This book is full of surprises. Fox and Bunny surprise Brownie and Bunny surprises Fox. A cute winter story that will delight preschoolers.

    11. I loved the first one of these-Brownie Groundhog and the February Surprise. This one is really good too. In this one, the groundhog and the fox are back and this time, they have a new friend, a bunny. When Brownie goes to sleep, the fox and the bunny try to find things to do to keep from getting too cold or too hungry. Unfortunately, they all seem to revolve around Brownie, who is trying to get some sleep. The fox puts together a very big surprise for her. It's lovely and will make a nice additi [...]

    12. I liked the friendship that formed between Brownie and the fox in the first book. And this one is nice too, with the addition of a new character, Bunny. Carmen Segovia's acrylic paint illustrations are whimsical, fun and have just the right clarity level for what I like to present at storytimes. You could pair this with Bear Snores On by Wilson, but they're so similar I wouldn't. I would pair it with Fox's Garden by Camcam for a fox themed storytime.

    13. This is an entertaining tale about hibernation and how other animals occupy their time during the long, cold winter months. The story is quite silly, and the illustrations are colorful and fun. We enjoyed reading this book together and I see that there's another story featuring Brownie Groundhog. We'll likely borrow that one soon, too.

    14. Brownie Groundhog and the Wintry Surprise by Susan Blackaby, illustrated by Carmen Segovia – I really appreciate Susan Blackaby’s books. It has been a while since I was able to read one. This is the sequel to another book called Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox. Enjoyed reading about how the groundhog is ready to hibernate but two friends think that they should create a wonderful surprise instead.

    15. This is a good story about the unlikely friendship of woodland creatures. It is a good story to read after having read Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox so that the reader has a back story as to why these characters are friends. The pictures are lovely and the characters are likable. This story has some humor that would be good for a read aloud setting.

    16. This book can be good to introduce new vocabulary. I felt like the story might be a little tough for my students to grasp due to the language that needed to be explained. It might be a good book just to introduce animals hibernating.

    17. (view spoiler)[Codependent fox interrupts his friend's hibernation out of loneliness, has a great time with them. With the fox's maudlin over a friend hibernating, it's no wonder he hasn't eaten the rabbit and groundhog yet. (hide spoiler)]

    18. This was a sweet story. A little long for the younger ones, but could be told in an abbreviated way. lovely whimsical pictures. animals in sweaters and bathrobes. bunting! lights! this has pinterest all over it.

    19. The illustrations are reminiscent of yesteryear. Rich and layered, they take the reader into the woods with the fox, groundhog, and beaver who share a special holiday together. This is an enjoyable winter book.

    20. I love this story. The illustrations are fantastic and add so much to the beauty of the book. I highly recommend.

    21. Brownie Groundhog is hibernating. Fox is bored and missing his friend, so he makes her a surprise, disturbing her sleep along the way. I love the illustrations in this so much!

    22. This was our chosen holiday book for 2013, recommended by the great staff at Annie Bloom's bookstore. The author, Susan Blackaby, lives in Oregon. Sweet story, with a Groundhog Day sequel.

    23. Love the humor of this book. I love when I can laugh out loud with my children as we read. And, the illustrations are fabulous.
