      • Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan.Agatha Christie is the best selling author of all time She wrote eighty crime novels and story collections, fourteen plays, and several other books Her books have sold roughly four billion copies and have been translated into 45 languages She is the creator of the two most enduring figures in crime literature Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple and author of The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the history of modern theatre Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Torquay, Devon, England, U.K as the youngest of three The Millers had two other children Margaret Frary Miller 1879 1950 , called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha s senior, and Louis Montant Miller 1880 1929 , called Monty, ten years older than Agatha During the First World War, she worked at a hospital as a nurse later working at a hospital pharmacy, a job that influenced her work, as many of the murders in her books are carried out with poison. On Christmas Eve 1914 Agatha married Archibald Christie, an aviator in the Royal Flying Corps The couple had one daughter, Rosalind Hicks They divorced in 1928, two years after Christie discovered her husband was having an affair. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, came out in 1920 During this marriage, Agatha published six novels, a collection of short stories, and a number of short stories in magazines. In late 1926, Agatha s husband, Archie, revealed that he was in love with another woman, Nancy Neele, and wanted a divorce On 8 December 1926 the couple quarreled, and Archie Christie left their house Styles in Sunningdale, Berkshire, to spend the weekend with his mistress at Godalming, Surrey That same evening Agatha disappeared from her home, leaving behind a letter for her secretary saying that she was going to Yorkshire Her disappearance caused an outcry from the public, many of whom were admirers of her novels Despite a massive manhunt, she was not found for eleven days.In 1930, Christie married archaeologist Max Mallowan Sir Max from 1968 after joining him in an archaeological dig Their marriage was especially happy in the early years and remained so until Christie s death in 1976 In 1977, Mallowan married his longtime associate, Barbara Parker.Christie frequently used familiar settings for her stories Christie s travels with Mallowan contributed background to several of her novels set in the Middle East Other novels such as And Then There Were None were set in and around Torquay, where she was born Christie s 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express was written in the Hotel Pera Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, the southern terminus of the railway The hotel maintains Christie s room as a memorial to the author The Greenway Estate in Devon, acquired by the couple as a summer residence in 1938, is now in the care of the National Trust.Christie often stayed at Abney Hall in Cheshire, which was owned by her brother in law, James Watts She based at least two of her stories on the hall the short story The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding, which is in the story collection of the same name, and the novel After the Funeral Abney became Agatha s greatest inspiration for country house life, with all the servants and grandeur which have been woven into her plots.During the Second World War, Christie worked in the pharmacy at University College Hospital of University College, London, where she acquired a knowledge of poisons that she put to good use in her post war crime novels To honour her many literary works, she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1956 New Year Honours The next year, she became the President of the Detection Club In the 1971 New Year Honours she was promoted Dame Commande

    1. No Marple. No Tuppence. No Poirot. Mon Dieu! Yet this short Christie mystery remains one of my favorites, likely due to the interesting characterization and well-crafted plot. It gradually builds tension, with a rather unanticipated but satisfying ending. An English man and a woman become fast companions as they serve their country in Egypt. Charles is about to ship out and isn't sure when he'll get back to England, so at their good-bye dinner, he shares his feelings but refuses to ask Sophia to [...]

    2. One of my very favorite things about Agatha Christie is that when she said anyone could be a murderer under the right circumstances, she *meant* it. One would think that when you read a mystery, you should suspect everyone, but for most authors it just isn't true--if you read a "cozy" author, you can bet it won't be one of the charming young lovers, or the trusty narrator, or dear old Granny, or the kindly priest. With Christie, it could be any of those, or everybody, or nobody (oh yes!). It cou [...]

    3. Published in 1949 this is a stand-alone Agatha Christie novel which was, apparently, one of her personal favourites. Our narrator, Charles Hayward, fell in love with Sophia Leonides during the war and intends to marry her if he returns safely to England. However, his plans are thwarted when Sophia’s grandfather, Aristide Leonides, is poisoned and the family come under suspicion – with Sophia stating she will not marry him until the crime is solved. Sophia and her family would prefer the murd [...]

    4. 3.5 stars"Because this is just what a nightmare is. Walking about among people you know, looking in their faces- and suddenly the faces change- and it's not someone you know any longer- it's a stranger- a cruel stranger."If you like to read mystery's where all the members of a family are a suspect for a murder committed within the family , then this is your kind of book. The book starts off with Charlie and Sophie, Sophie's grandfather is murdered and Charlie's dad is the Chief of police. Frankly [...]

    5. Choose Your Own Adventure! You are a precocious child in a complicated world filled with scheming relatives & heirs to fortune & smitten suitors & gold-digging wives & husky tutors & cast-out sons & amateur sleuths. Your life is centered within a vast country manor dominated by your dread grandfather, who sits like a senescent spider in the center of his enormous web, a web whose tangles he created but no longer bothers to repair. Then murder strikes and grandfather is no [...]

    7. Wealthy businessman Aristide Leonides has been murdered after someone swapped out his insulin for poison! Leonides’ children are quick to blame their elderly dad’s young bride who looks to inherit his fortune – but did the gold-digger and her secret lover dunit or is the killer someone else in the household…?Disappointing! Crooked House is the first Agatha Christie novel I haven’t enjoyed at all. It’s a bland, dull mystery without anything much interesting happening. Did you ever pla [...]

    8. 4.5“Murder, you see, is an amateur crime.” Crooked House is Christie at her best. No wonder it was her favourite, together with Ordeal by Innocence (on that one, I can't say I agree, though), of all her works. Not a shred of a material clue, a jungle of psychological intricacies, a solution so unpredictable I had to read that part twice. The reason this is not a full five for me is that I couldn't develop a real connection with the protagonist/narrator, a bit too bland, and with Sophia, the [...]

    9. Reportedly, Crooked House was one of Agatha Christie's favorite books to write. She held onto the idea for years waiting for a time she could write for her own personal enjoyment and thank God she did. However, my favorite part of Crooked House was the characters, not the mystery. Ms. Christie created a fascinating case study of a dysfunctional family where the crookedness might astound you. I suspected who the murderer was for quite a while but the fabulous Ms. Christie has a talent for throwin [...]

    10. There was a crooked manand he went a crooked mile.He found a crooked sixpencebeside a crooked stile. He had a crooked catwhich caught a crooked mouse,And they all lived togetherin a little crooked house.Crooked House is a stand-alone novel. I.e. it does not feature any of Christie's established sleuths (Marple, Poirot, Tommy & Tuppence, etc.).The story tells of a young couple, Charles and Sophia, who decide to postpone any decisions on getting married until after the war. Once the time has co [...]

Για μενα παραμενει νουμερο ενα το "then there were none", τουλαχιστον σε αυτα που εχω διαβασει ως τωρα.3,5 αστερακια

    18. Read this in one sitting. Couldn't put it down! Has quickly become one of my favorite Christie's. Loved the plot and twist at the very end, I can definitely see why this was one of Christie's own favorites. I also find it fascinating that the publishers wanted her to change the ending, but she refused. So glad she didn't. I don't think it would have been the same if it would have been changed.

    19. "You see, we're a very queer family There's a lot of ruthlessness in us – and very different kinds of ruthlessness. That's what's so disturbing."Reading an Agatha Christie book is a little bit like coming home to me – a creepy (in this case, crooked) home, full of murder and deception, but still a home. Her books are both familiar and completely new to me, introducing different characters and conflicts each time.I thoroughly enjoyed getting sucked into the crookedness of the eponymous crooke [...]

    20. Since this gets the distinction of being one of Christie’s favorite books that she wrote, I guess I was expecting a bit more from Crooked House, which I actually found to be the most predictable of any of her novels that I’ve read so far. Still, I enjoyed all these characters a lot and had fun watching everything unfold.

    21. Re-read 2017There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,And they all lived together in a little crooked houseHearing that an adaptation was being aired on Sunday, I just had to re-visit this story. Yes, it is entertaining, but echoing what I said last time, it isn’t her best. Yet, it stays with you for the horrible resolution (view spoiler)[ to have the child as the murderer was a s [...]

    22. Honestly I don't have that much to say here besides the fact that I really really love this book. This was one of Agatha Christie's favorite books and I can see why. There are a lot of twists and turns and I thought I figured out the perpetrator, but per usual, I was wrong."Crooked House" follows the character of Charles Hayward, as he goes about investigating who could have murdered his potential fiance's (Sophia) grandfather, Mr. Aristide Leonides. Christie sets up the book so readers get to r [...]

    24. This BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of Crooked House has a wonderful cast, including Rory Kinnear, Anna Maxwell Martin & Phil Davis. Unfortunately a great cast cannot make it into a great story. Don't get me wrong. is a good Christie novel, but not one to get the pulses racing.

    28. Like a 3.7/3.8 rounded up. I finished this book two days ago, and in the meantime, I've been giving it a lot of thought. One thing that strikes me here is that while it may not be my favorite Christie mystery, there is a huge difference between this book and the majority of her other novels that really stands out in terms of plot vs. what's happening around the plot. I think more than in any other Christie crime novel, Dame Agatha takes us right to the heart of the matter from the very outset. I [...]
