    1. This was one of the better prompts I've read for this event: fresh, sexy, and intriguing, with guiding parameters but not an entire story outline. How someone could take that fantastic prompt and turn it into this hot and dull mess of a story is beyond me. The entire story is narrated. We are TOLD what the MCs are feeling or what they said; we are never shown. There is almost no dialogue, no scene in the MOMENT, just endless, monotonous repetition of events, like BBC Radio but far less interestin [...]

    2. Realism trumps romance. The tribulations of Sergey are pertinent and contemporary, and depressingly true. While I appreciate the spotlight of Russia's hateful repression of homosexuality, it made for a difficult read. Add in the dry reportage writing style and I felt alienated from anything the characters were experiencing or feeling.

    3. The way the story has been told makes it very difficult to become emotionally involved with the characters. e.g.He continued to read the will. They learned that a life insurance policy and the estate would be split equally between Sergey and Veronika, with her part going into a trust fund as per the law. A reasonable amount would be released to pay for Veronika’s upkeep until she was old enough to control the trust herself. When Mr Valuev had finished, Sergey told Viktor that he would take a ta [...]

    4. This was a sad/sweet story of what happens (and wish didn't) in areas around the world. The Book & The Rose was dramatic; a lot happens in this story, and it spans over a years time. I'm personally not a fan of the writing style but I imagine it will work for others. I found it difficult to feel the passing of time. I also found the writing to be clinical and stilted. That's not to say that the author didn't tell a good story, I just feel like it missed it's mark somehow (I'm going to attrib [...]

    6. what a peculiarly informative story. The narration is veryurt testimony. This happened, for this reason, and X felt this way as a result. X said *blank* to Y, and they did *action*. etc.At one point, I mused to myself this seemed very infomercial-y. Or documentary-y. "You can tell MC is not a tourist because ___." kay. Thanks, but that wasn't actually anywhere near necessary info. Kind of cool to know, I guess, but it's getting in the way of the story, what there is of it. And all of the explana [...]

    7. Based on the prompt (the gorgeous guys!), this one had potential. I realize this is the author's first book so I applaud the courage to try and write the story. I also noticed he's Irish and lives in Spain just like one of the characters.Parts of this story were good. Unfortunately, most of the story was told narrated. There was very little dialogue. The story felt more like a commentary on the horrible Russian government and their hatred towards the LGBT community. Since I live in the U.S I fee [...]

    8. Offered for FREE from the M/M Romance Group's Love's Landscapes event. Thank you too all the amazing authors who participated! This is gonna be a no-go for me based on friends reviews.

    9. While this book did have a few redeeming qualities, due to a lack of editorial contribution I would not recommend. My Rating System:* couldn't finish, ** wouldn't recommend, *** would recommend, **** would read again, ***** have read again.

    10. This is a beautifully written story. It tells a tale of the toughest choice that any lover - perhaps every lover - has to face. Do I, in the interest of the person I love, make the ultimate sacrifice and give that peron up? The author uses a deceptively simple and matter-of-fact style to take us deep into two contrasting places that the reader may or may not know Modern Barcelona, and Putin's scary Russia. Hats off.

    11. I'm sorry to say that i couldn't really get in to it. it felt very disconnected to me because we are TOLD things we DON'T FEEL IT! so i couldn't really dig it

    12. [NOTE: I rate most writing event stories (free reads) 4 or 5 stars because of my appreciation of the author's participation and gift.]
