    1. I don't watch TV, I read books. So I like straightforward, fun, well written books that I don't want to put down, and this historical romance definitely one of them. There was a little humour, a little misunderstanding, but nothing overly complicated and the story just got on with itself and kept me entertained. Lucas is a mysterious fellow who comes to the aid of two young and pretty sisters who live in an isolated cabin. He has a need to stay in the area so quickly insinuates himself on their [...]

    2. I received this book from the author for an honest review. This is the first time I read a historical western romance and although this is not the type of story I normally read – I’m more into historical novels set in the medieval era in different parts of the world and fantasy with a historical background with lots of action and twists – I can say that I will certainly read a few more, given the occasion as I did like this story. It was a nice change from those complicated stories I usuall [...]

    3. Loving Lucas is the first book in The Ladies of Cascade Creek series by Ann Marie Oakes. It is a great beginning for a series. The descriptions are clear and vibrant. The characters are believable and realistic. The plot is one that happened many times in the old West so it is realistic as well. It could be a little better developed if they book was longer. Lucas Brown came across a small farm in a valley. The house was being fired upon by two drunken cowboys. They were shooting at the house and [...]

    4. This was a very nice easy read and I enjoyed it. What a pleasant change to read a book that doesn't have your gut tied in knots because of the heavy angst, heartbreak, betrayal and trashy language. Loving Lucas is a sweet romance with a touch of suspense.Audra Canton and her sister Lilah lost their father not long ago and have decided to keep their family homestead. Interested suitors are determined to wed one of the daughters with the hope of owning and controlling their property. The young lad [...]

    5. I really enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. I'm really not a fan of historical fiction but this was far from the tedious read I was expecting.Lucas was a noble and delectable character, and Audra was a refreshing female main character, breaking away from the typical helpless & repressed woman all too often portrayed in historical fiction. She was intelligent, independent and industrious. She was not sitting around waiting for love or out trying to find a suitable husbnd. Whe [...]

    6. Audra and her sister Lilah just lost their father. Now they have a lot of unwanted attention from men who want to marry them to gain access to their homestead. When they are under fire from such men, an unexpected shot is fired and the men take off. Turns out Lucas was just settling in up the canyon when the gunshots started and he's made his way down to protect the women in the cabin. They end up letting him stay in the barn and help out around the place for a while. He hasn't told them why he w [...]

    7. When two women are left after their father had passed away, they soon found that men would try to take advantage and add a wife and property to their list of possessions.Luckily, a stranger happens along, just as things were getting unruly. He summed up the situation and ensured that the women were safe. He bargained for a chance to stay, working for bed and board, which would allow him to go about his business in the area. One of the women felt strongly attracted to the stranger. Yes the plot th [...]

    8. This was an okay read for me. It is fast paced and I found the chemistry lacking. The story was good just wanted more both in story and development between the characters.

    9. Good readingI really enjoyed this wonderful story. The characters are believable, This is a nice bed time or really any time read.So just give it a try.

    10. Well I have to say I absolutely hate to read these short books. This one has a good storyline but just when things start happening, ‘The End’. I loved Audra and Lilah, they are two strong women having lost both father and mother are trying to stay on their homestead and carve their life in a man’s world. Life was tough in those days especially for young women, but these two are full of spunk and tough as nails. As always in the old western days women aren’t worth much more than a piece o [...]

    11. Loving Lucas is an historical romance set in the late 1800's. Audra and Lilah are suddenly left with a ranch to run when their father dies. They realize the difficulties in trying to keep the place going and in repair without a man around. So do all the men in the area, so they keep trying to get the women to marry them in order to get the ranch. Two men decide to go to the ranch and propose to one of the women. In their drunken state, it seemed like a good idea to shoot at the house to scare th [...]

    12. I really loved the story and pace of this book, it wasn't dragged out to feel pages, yet you still get to know the characters very well, audra and lilah are sister who's parents have both passed, they're brother went off to war and hasn't been heard from for years, they are living on the family homestead alone, they are receiving some unwanted attention from local men in the most unusual way instead of trying to court the girls they shot at them!! Great imaginative writing from AnnMarie!! Lucas [...]

    13. Audra Canton and her sister have inherited the ranch that they had grown up on when their father died a few months back. Some of the local unmarried men have been attempting to get the ladies to marry so that they can get their hands on the property. For now, the sisters think they can handle it themselves and have no intention of getting married.Lucas Blake, lawman is in the area chasing an outlaw by the name of Black Jack Reynolds. He has tracked him to an area close to the sisters ranch when [...]

    14. *** Copy received by author in exchange for an honest review!***First let me say that I loved this book SO much, I just entered the Giveaway for a print copy because that is my favorite form of media and I plan on reading this book many more times in my lifetime! That being said, HIGH FIVE GOOD OLD WESTERN STARS for AnnMarie Oakes!Anyone that reads Historical westerns knows how tough these times were on most everybody, but especially women. And a woman on her own or even two? What? That's just [...]

    15. I received an ARC of this book from the author for my honest review.I liked the whole premise of this story and really enjoy this genre of book. My main purpose for reading is for getting away from reality for a bit and feel like I'm part of another world. While I enjoyed these characters, I had a hard time connecting with them. I think the reason for that, is the story felt a bit too choppy to me when changing from point of view between Lucas and Audra. Maybe if the book was longer, the charact [...]

    16. The first book in The Ladies of Cascade Creek series by AnnMarie Oakes. Lucas is bedding down for the night when he hears shots and rushes to the aid of two young women who are being shot at by men who want to marry them. Audra and Lilah are working the farm after their father passes and they don't have any desire to sell or marry their "suitors". They are pleased to hire Lucas on to discourage those suitors. This book is more of a novella but for being that it was really not bad. For those who w [...]

    17. Loving Lucas was a great historical romance. I had to say AnnMarie had me hooked from the first page, their was no part of the book that lacked my attention or made me bored to wanna skip through pages Lucas comes into the book to the rescue of two woman Audra & Lilah two ranch hands from a nearby farm where shooting at their home to try to get them to open to door. Suiters that wanted to marry them, they were having none of it, they were drunk also. Lucas shoots one in the leg & they bo [...]

    18. I have read many western historicals and enjoy the genre. this is the first in a series about 2 sisters who have lost their parents and choose to remain on the family ranch in the Colorado Territory. The story opens with 2 intoxicated cowboys standing outside their ranch house at night trying to lure the women out of their house.Lilah and her older sister Audra are rescued by Lucas Brown who had camped out for the night close by.In exchange for the rescue the women invite him in and Lucas procee [...]

    19. Audra and her sister Lilah lost their father not long ago, leaving them alone with no family bar each other, and they have decided to keep their family homestead. But back in 'the old west' women weren't seen as capable of doing that. But they are determined to not marry to keep their home but for love. One of the first scenes shows a pair of suitors show up shooting in hopes of gaining one of the ladies by fear. (Not exactly my idea of a romantic proposal!) Lukas, who is camping nearby hears the [...]

    20. Loving Lucas (The Ladies of Cascade Creek #1) by AnnMarie OakesThe Colorado Territory of the 1870s is a hard place for women by herself. Audra Canton's and her sister are on their own after their father died. The suitors in the area have an odd way of making a case: they keep shooting at them. Audra needs help learning to protect herself and her sister.Lucas Blake comes into the picture when she scares off a couple of suitors. Audra takes him on as a hired hand. He has a secret; he’s a lawman [...]

    21. AnnMarie Oakes has written a wonderful story, it did not seem like a novella at all, I was so involved in the book it felt like a full length novel, there was nothing left out. The characters are interesting, and the setting of Cascade Creek is lovely to imagine living there. Audra and her sister Lilah, two tough ladies who are trying to carve out a living on their small farm, are doing a pretty good job of it, until one night out of the dark comes their mysterious hero Lucas, who chases off two [...]

    22. Difficult to express myself on this one. On one hand, the plot could work for a nice romance with a bit of action thrown in to shake things up just so. On the other, I was unable to connect with Audra and Lucas. I couldn’t feel their emotions or worry about their fate. Little things kept suspending my belief in the story. (view spoiler)[ Like the way they so easily dispensed with formality and started talking on a 1st name basis. Like the way Audra didn’t bother much with her sister’s feel [...]

    23. A historical romance that turns out to be a great story. Lucas Blake is a lawman looking for the bad guy, Black Jack Reynolds. He comes across two men shooting at a farmhouse that he finds out has two young women inside. The gunman are drunk and yelling for the ladies to come out, they just want to marry them. Turns out since their father died, Audra and Lilah have gotten more suitors than they need. With the help of Lucas and a small lie, he doesn't tell them he is a lawman, the two drunks leav [...]

    24. I received the book Loving Lucas from the Author with the promise to give my honest review. From the very first page I was hooked. I read this book all the way through at once.Audra and Lilah are two sister that live on the family homestead. Their father had died and they had not seen their brother in many years.Lucas is camping when he comes to the rescue of the sisters. There are to local men that are drunk and harassing the ladies and shooting path their house.Lilah the younger of the two, is [...]

    25. I was given this book free in exchange for a review. The opinions expressed are mine alone. Since I've read the author's work before(at least one book), I was fairly certain that I would enjoy the book. She did not disappoint. This is a story of two sisters who are on struggling to "get by" on their own. Audra the older one is a rather "no nonsense" sort of girl while Lilah struck me as a young, flirty girl just testing her "female wiles" so to speak. The story begins as Lucas comes across the tw [...]

    26. Enjoyable romp through the wild westI got through the whole book before realizing I'd previously read another book from the series. It's an interesting tale of 2 sisters struggling to keep their homestead afloat after their father dies. The Civil War has been over for a decade, and the brother who went off to fight in the war hasn't been heard from since. While a couple of drunken cowhands from the neighboring ranch are trying to force the sisters into unwanted engagements, a Marshall tracking a [...]

    27. It was ok it was a good quick romance but for me it just was not really any different then a lot of western romance. It may have been that I just have not been into that type of book for awhile and am on a dystopen/fantasy books right now or what it is. i just have to say it but the cover is a BIG turn off. It looks just like a cheap grocery store romance book. But it is a good guilty pleasure type of book. i am sure i would have liked it a lot more if not for that cover. I just felt like i shoul [...]

    28. 4 stars. Although a novella (179 pgs) it did not leave me feeling incomplete. All the characters were likable, the story was entertaining. One thing that I find lacking in novellas is they sometimes seem a bit rushed, leaving little room to thouroughly get into great depth of the characters. The authour did a good job in making the characters feel real with little time to do so.A nice relaxing, sweet read. Steam level was pretty good. ABout 3 love making scenes that were good but not as detailed [...]

    29. Audra and Lilah are trying to survive in the harsh wilds of the old west. They are bugged by men trying to take over their land. Lucas come along at just the right time to help them, as repairs are needed. But the girls do not know he has another reason for wanting to stay, he is tracking a killer. The sparks fly between Lucas and Audra, he try's to be a gentleman but the heat between them is too strong. This was a great short read about a time that was hard on people just trying to survive. If [...]
